RETAIL MARKET

According to recent statistics, food retailers make up nearly 50 percent of the total retail sales in Spain. This astonishing figure is just one of the reasons so many companies are looking to do business with supermarkets and other food retailers in Spain. Over the years, the food retail industry in Spain has made tremendous strides in manufacturing, technology, and marketing efforts.

In Spain, supermarkets and hypermarkets rule the food retail industry. These larger, chain stores offer customers convenience and low prices. With a wide variety of different products including food, and just about anything else you can think of, these stores have become a staple of the lifestyle in Spain.

In order to break into the food retail industry in Spain, it's important to understand how it is structured. Food retailers are divided into five different types of stores. The five store types are: independent distributor, convenience stores, small supermarkets, large supermarkets, and hypermarkets. Small supermarkets are less than 400 square feet in size, while supermarkets and hypermarkets are 2,500 square feet or more in size.
