PAKISTAN RETAIL MARKET Given the developing nature of the country, a large portion of consumption is of basic necessities. Consequently, food, beverages and tobacco accounted for as much as 73% of retail sales in 2002. The share of food related items fell only slightly over the review period, from 73.5% in 1999. This trend is expected to continue, and even accelerate, as higher incomes permit consumers to spend more on items other than basic necessities. Regionally, Punjab, which makes up 60% of total sales, experienced the highest growth rate over the review period, as improvements in infrastructure, urbanisation, and easy credit has boosted investment. HYPERMARKET Hypermarket industry in Pakistan is still in the developing stage. In fact, the only identifiable chain is state-owned Utility Stores Corporation, which holds just 0.3 percent of the market. With strong GDP growth averaging just over 6 percent for the past three years, and a government determined to attract foreign investment, up-and-coming Pakistan is beginning to capture retailers’ attention. SHV Makro plans to open 30 stores, and Spinney expects to open six to eight. In addition, Metro will open its first Cash & Carry outlet by the end of this year, with plans to build 20 more outlets in the longer term. KEY STATISTICS Population: 165,803,560 (July 2006 est.)
